Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about the race, registration, and logistics.

What is The Great Ski Race?

Since 1976 the Great Ski Race is the primary annual fundraiser for the Tahoe Nordic Search & Rescue team.

What are the course options?

The race offers two courses: a challenging 26km course with an elevation gain of 1,636 feet and a more accessible 10km course with an elevation gain of 453 feet.

What is The Tour Wave?

The Tour Wave is for those looking to ski the 26km course but at their own, leisurely pace. This wave will not be timed and have no posted online race results. To ski in this wave, you must self-start at TXC between 7:30am and 7:45am (no sooner, no later). Designed for those looking to enjoy the course, the finish line party and festive atmosphere of the GSR but not interested in securing a podium finish. Note that all Tour Wave skiers are expected to know the course and yield to upcoming racers behind them. Limited to the first 35 participants to sign up.

Can I bring my dog?

No, it is not permitted to race with dogs.

Can I snowshoe the course?

Snowshoeing is not permitted on the course.

Is the race classic or skate?

Both classic and skate skiers are welcome, with tracks available for classic skiers on the entire course.

Can I get a refund or rollover if I can’t race?

No, refunds or rollovers are not possible if you are unable to race.

Is the race for beginners?

The 26km race is considered a test of endurance and skill. While skiers of all abilities enter, beginners are not advised to due to its length and remoteness but instead are encouraged to register for the 10km race, which is ideal.

Are fluorocarbon waxes allowed?

No, the race is a fluorocarbon wax-free event for environmental and public health reasons.

Who runs the event?

The event is staffed entirely by volunteers associated with the Tahoe Nordic Search & Rescue team. Everyone you meet on race weekend that is working – parking, registration, start and finish, soup stations, etc – is a volunteer with some association to Tahoe Nordic Search & Rescue. If they are old, ask them for a story. If they are old and short, it’s Doug Read, the co-founder. In all cases, offer a high-five.

Where can I rent equipment or practice?

For practice and equipment rentals, participants can contact the Tahoe Cross Country center, where the race starts and finishes.

Can I change my wave or course after I register?

Sure! Please email us with your specific request.
