FAQs

Unfortunately I registered but won’t be able to race; is it possible to get a refund or rollover for next year? Sorry, but refunds or rollovers are not possible.

Is this really a fundraiser? And if so for who? The Great Ski Race has been the primary annual fundraiser for the Tahoe Nordic Search & Rescue team since 1976. The race has a long history, and the funds go towards a few of the team needs. Everyone you meet on race weekend that is working – parking, registration, start and finish, soup stations, etc – is a volunteer with some association to Tahoe Nordic Search & Rescue. If they are old, ask them for a story. If they are old and short, it’s Doug Read, the co-founder. In all cases, offer a high-five.

What is the elevation gain for the two courses? The elevation gain for the 26km course is 1636 feet, while the gain for the 10km course is 453 feet.

Can I classic ski the course? Yes! There will be tracks along the entire course (26km and 10km) for classic skiers.

Can I snowshoe (walking or running) the course? Sorry, but no. This is only a ski race with hundred’s of skiers (both skate and classic).

Where should I park? Take a look at the parking and transportation details for race day.

I am already registered; can I change the wave or the course (26km or 10km) I registered for? Sure! Please contact us with your specific requests.

What kind of shape should I be in for such a race? The 26km race is a test of endurance and skill; be sure you are in good shape so you can enjoy the course. Due to the length (26 kilometers, ~16.2 miles) and remoteness of the course beginners are not advised to enter; but skiers of all abilities and ages do enter this fun and challenging race.

Where can I go to get some practice cross country skiing in? Please visit and ski at the Tahoe Cross Country center, where the race starts and finishes.

Can I rent some equipment for the race? Please contact the Tahoe Cross Country ski area.

Can I use flourocarbon was on my skis?In the interest of public and environmental health The Great Ski Race is a flourocarbon wax-free race.  Please DO NOT wax your skis with anything containing flourocarbons. If this is unclear please reach out to the Tahoe Cross Country Center.

Is this really a race? Whether or not you are truly racing is up to you…

Can I race with my dog? Out of consideration for all the race participants, please make other arrangements for your pets. Thanks!
